# The Old England Manor (老英格蘭莊園)

> A Tudor-style luxury manor hotel set at roughly 1,700 m above sea level in the mountains of Qingjing (清境), Nantou County, Taiwan. Opened in 2010 after some nine years of construction by founder Lo Chieh Hung (羅介鴻), who hand-drew over 2,000 design sketches and traveled to England for field research. Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH). All rooms include complimentary breakfast and gourmet dinner per occupant.

The chef designs menus around the seasons, using local Taiwanese ingredients at their peak, so the offering changes throughout the year. ## Room Policies & House Rules (住宿政策)

- **Visitors:** interior access is limited to overnight and dining guests; lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner are open to non-guests by advance reservation; photography-only visits are not admitted. Friends visiting a staying guest must be arranged in advance and received in the lobby.
- **Extra guests:** only the Anthem Double Suite, Romance Suite (both variants), Fantasia Suite – Double (Twin Beds), and Fantasia Suite – Double (King Bed) accept an additional guest, with advance notice. Extra-guest charges are higher during Lunar New Year — contact the hotel to confirm.
- **Children:** welcome, though the manor retains the character of a classic European castle (antique furnishings, stairs and steps throughout). Rates: ages 11+ are charged as adults, NT$4,000 each; ages 6–10 NT$2,600 each (no extra bed provided); under 6 the first child stays free and a second is NT$2,600.
- **Baby equipment:** a small number of baby cots and bathtubs can be borrowed — request when booking to be sure one is reserved.
- **Room preferences:** rooms are spread across area A, B and C, each unique; preferences (higher floor, particular style) can be noted at booking but cannot be guaranteed.
- **Celebrations:** birthday cakes or room decorations need at least 3 days' notice; paid decoration packages available via the front desk.
- The entire property is non-smoking; pets (guide dogs excepted), cooking, BBQ, and mahjong are not permitted.
- Drones are prohibited throughout the estate, for guest privacy and safety.
- Late checkout is charged NT$2,500 per hour — contact the front desk in advance to arrange.
- There is no elevator and no accessible-certified rooms — light luggage is recommended. Lower-floor rooms near the restaurant can be arranged on request; mention limited mobility when booking.
- The mountain area is remote with limited medical facilities: bring personal medication, and insect repellent in spring and summer.
- **Force majeure:** if a typhoon, earthquake, or similar event occurs on the stay date, contact reservations within 3 days (including the stay date) for a refund, or keep the deposit valid for use within one year.

- **By car from central/southern Taiwan:** National Highway 3 → exit at Wuqi interchange → National Highway 6 toward Puli → Route 14 toward Wushe (霧社) → Route 14A for ~6.3 km.
- **By car from eastern Taiwan:** Provincial Highway 8 → Dayuling (大禹嶺) → Hehuanshan → Wuling (武嶺) → Cuifeng (翠峰), then past Qingjing Farm to the Tai-14A 6.3 km mark.
- **By bus (客運):** Nantou Bus (南投客運) Qingjing route from THSR Taichung Station Exit 5 to the Longzhuang stop (龍莊站), right beside the manor gate; buses also run from Puli (埔里).

- **Nearby:** Qingjing Farm's Green Green Grassland (青青草原) ~4.2 km / 8–10 min drive, open daily 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, home of the sheep-shearing show and equestrian performances; the Qingjing Skywalk (清境高空觀景步道), a 1.6 km elevated walkway at 1,700–2,000 m with gentle grades suited to elders and children, open daily 8:00 AM–5:00 PM with last entry 4:30 PM; Little Swiss Garden (小瑞士花園) ~4–5 km; Wushe (霧社) ~7 km; Hehuanshan (合歡山) ~50 min drive — the Yuanfeng (鳶峰) dark-sky deck for stargazing and the summer Milky Way, and Wuling (武嶺), the highest point on Taiwan's road network. Main Peak trail 3,417 m (a gentle introduction to Taiwan's hundred peaks), Shimen Mountain 3,237 m (shortest and friendliest), East Peak 3,421 m (mostly stairs, more demanding, alpine rhododendrons in May–June).

## The Seasons (四季景致)

At 1,700 m, mornings and evenings run some 10–12°C cooler than the lowlands, even in summer — a warm, windproof coat is worth packing year-round for outdoors and the music hall.

- **Spring (Mar–May):** cherry blossoms and wisteria bloom in relay, the gardens fill with flowers, and the hills turn fresh green. Around 10–18°C.
- **Summer (Jun–Aug):** Qingjing's most comfortable season — clear days and cool air, with star-filled skies and the Milky Way from Hehuanshan at night. Around 15–23°C.
- **Autumn (Sep–Nov):** bald cypress and maples turn gold and crimson around the bell tower and gardens; a kind season for cloud-sea watchers. Around 12–19°C.
- **Winter (Dec–Feb):** a quiet, bare-branched calm — and when a cold front brings snow, the white-capped Central Mountain Range is visible from the manor itself. Around 5–12°C, near 0°C in cold snaps; bring a heavy coat, a hat and warm layers.

## Founder (創辦人)

**Name:** Lo Chieh Hung (羅介鴻), affectionately known as "Da-Lo" (大羅); his younger brother "Xiao-Lo" (小羅) supported construction and daily operations behind the scenes — the manor is run by the Lo family (羅氏家族) with family spirit as its backbone.

- Military background (studied chemical engineering at Chung Cheng Institute of Technology); no formal architectural or design training
- Inspired by century-old European hotels; spent years reading architectural books and made field research trips to England
- Hand-drew over 2,000 design sketches; personally worked on land preparation, rebar tying, stone carving, woodwork, and landscaping
- Traveled to Europe to hand-select furniture, décor, and stained glass
- The Old England Manor is his third Qingjing property, after Shangrila Hanging Garden (清境空中花園, 1994) and Shangrila Music Villa (霞飛音樂城堡, 2004)
- Vision: to build a "百年飯店" (century-old hotel) in Taiwan — a property meant to be passed down through generations. The family emblem on the clock tower bears the "LO" (羅) initials flanked by two cherubs representing his two sons.
